Finding Jesus in the BelieversI was raised a Christian from birth and had heard about Jesus, God, the disciples, Moses, and Noah but I never chose the Lord Jesus as my life and meaning. I went to school at the University of California at Berkeley and this meant being exposed to a variety of choices for fellowship such as Protestant, Methodist, and Baptist. I was also exposed to a variety of activities from Christian groups such as broomball and to academic activities like the biochemistry honors society. I enjoyed being out from under the scrutiny of my parents watchful eyes in my freshman year. I played in the arcades, watched movies, even played foosball with some Christian brothers. The Lord Jesus was as unreal to me as the molecules and chemical formulas memorized religiously by all my fellow classmates. Christian in name only, I had no idea who my God was or what was on His heart.
I must say that my finding the Lord Jesus was the Lord's mercy. I had contact with some Christian sisters who regularly attended the church in Berkeley. I would go and eat lunch or read the Bible with them. I had never really read the Bible in a thorough and regular way. I slowly learned the basics of what it meant to be a Christian and, more importantly, I learned to have a daily contact with my Lord Jesus. I read a footnote in the book of Hebrews chapter 12 verse two in the Recovery Version of the Bible. It struck me deeply. The verse starts, Looking away unto Jesus, the Author and Perfector of our faith...
In the footnote Witness Lee described our wonderful Jesus as the One ...enthroned in heaven and crowned with glory and honor. This Jesus is ...the greatest attraction in the universe...an immense magnet, drawing all His seekers to Him...[Only by] being attracted by His charming beauty can we look away from all things other than Him...[and] so many distracting things on this earth. In me was a response to this word. I wanted to know this wonderful Jesus in a real and living way, not just a Master who ran the universe.
Where was I to find this Jesus? As I continued following my Christian sisters to meetings and Bible studies and family dinners, I slowly realized that Jesus was in all the brothers and sisters! The times of fellowship were a mutual feeding time [John 21], feeding Jesus to all the other believers. When I was with the brothers and sisters in the church in Berkeley, I was supplied with the superabounding grace of the Lord Jesus [2 Cor. 9:8] and the unsearchable riches of Christ [Eph. 3:8]. Jesus was expressed and testified in all the believers. When I was with them, the Lord Jesus encouraged me through their prayers and fellowship. It was not just a social gathering but what the apostle Paul described in Ephesians 4:16, ...being joined together and being knit together through every joint of the rich supply and through the operation in the measure of each one part, causes the growth of the Body unto the building up of itself in love. [Eph. 4:16] By being with the believers in the church in Berkeley, I grew and was supplied.
